5 things you didn’t know about Romega

The fact that Romega is an omega-3 dietary supplement says a lot about the product itself. There is still much about Romega that is not equally known to everyone. Did you know, for example, that we had to develop a completely new production method to be able to make Romega? Or that Romega contains choline? Now you’re going to learn five things you might not have known about Romega.

1. Romega is a sustainable omega-3 dietary supplement

Romega is a forward-looking and sustainable dietary supplement for several reasons, but the core lies in the raw material itself. Herring in itself is actually rated as the world’s most sustainable fish food 1,4 , but one of the things that makes Romega even more special is how we utilize the roe of the herring itself.

Herring roe is a residual raw material. This means that the roe has for a long time been seen as a residual raw material that was either thrown away or used in animal feed. At Romega, we have used this raw material in a completely new way. This improves the nutrient utilization of the herring, while also helping to optimize the utilization of a traditionally important resource.

In 2020, we won the SIVA award for our contribution to green transition in a forward-looking industry, and for the innovations we have developed in the production of Romega. The Norwegian biomarine industry’s future success is actually predicted to be linked to a greater focus on optimal use of sustainable marine residual raw materials. Romega is an example of how this can be done in a good way.

2. Romega contains natural choline

Romega also has a natural content of the important nutrient choline, which is necessary for several processes in the body. Choline contributes to normal lipid metabolism, to maintaining normal liver function and normal homocysteine metabolism.

The body uses choline in the process to metabolize fat (lipid metabolism). Choline can also help maintain normal liver function. Not least, choline can contribute to the normal turnover of homocysteine in the body. Homocysteine can cause more cholesterol to form in the blood (LDL) than is desirable.

Beneficial effects are achieved with an intake of at least 82.5 mg of choline. Four capsules of Romega contain approximately 84 mg of choline.

3. Romega is developed with proprietary and patented technology

Herring roe is a fantastic raw material, so why hasn’t it been used in nutritional supplements before? Herring roe extracts do not behave like typical fish oils, and a completely different approach is therefore needed to process the raw material. If you use classic techniques to extract the fat fraction from the roe, you will be left with a viscous paste that is difficult to remove from the processing equipment.

Thanks to the wise minds at the laboratory in Ørsta, we found a new method to extract the fatty substances so that we avoid this problem. This method is patented and enables a gentle production press where the product does not come into contact with either oxygen or unnecessary heat. This is how we manage to keep the oil in Romega as fresh as possible.

4. Romega is the result of over 20 years of research into lipids

The innovation behind Romega has been developed on the basis of the great breadth we have within the field. Both chemistry, physiology, biology, physics and technology are important in their own ways. We also have a research environment of international calibre, which is quite special in our area. Romega is the result of over 20 years of research into lipids, much of which has taken place in Ørsta on Sunnmøre.

5. Romega can be an important dietary supplement for pregnant women

Romega contains three times more DHA than EPA, and is a rich source of DHA. The high content of DHA means that Romega can be a good alternative for you who are pregnant. The need for omega-3 increases during pregnancy because your fetus needs the omega-3 fatty acid  docosahexaenoic acid – often abbreviated DHA.  The fetus develops rapidly, and DHA contributes to the normal development of the eyes and  brain of the fetus .

Norwegian health authorities recommend that pregnant women get at least 200 mg of DHA daily. Two capsules of Romega contain 320 mg of DHA.

*) A beneficial effect for the brain and vision is achieved with a daily intake of 250 mg DHA, and for the heart a daily intake of 250 mg DHA and EPA. Two capsules of Romega give you this.
