Are you wondering how we ended up with herring roe as a raw material in Romega? Founder, Hogne Hallaråker, goes on to tell about the experiences that arose during the development of a dietary supplement from herring roe.
The science surrounding the production of herring roe extract
Herring roe extracts do not behave like typical fish oils, so a completely different approach is needed to process the raw material herring roe. If you use classic techniques to extract the fat fraction from the roe, you will be left with a viscous paste that is difficult to remove from the processing equipment. Thanks to the wise minds at the laboratory in Ørsta, we found a new method for extracting the fatty substances in such a way that we circumvented this problem.
Patented production process
This very gentle method of extracting the fatty substances from the roe was so effective that we decided to patent it. All Romega is therefore made with our own developed and patented production process, which distinguishes us from many other manufacturers and wholesalers in the omega-3 market. After optimizing the production process, we were free to continue researching the health effects of herring roe extracts.
Study on uptake of fatty acids from herring roe
A pilot project carried out together with the University of Bergen showed that herring roe extract increases the level of important omega-3 fatty acids in the body 1 . This study showed that fatty acids from herring roe extract enter the bloodstream of humans.
Herring oil is made into capsules
Before this study was carried out, we had only sold the oil in large 45 kilo barrels to foreign customers, who used it in their own products and as an ingredient in established products. Now we could finally offer the product in small capsules.
A brand is created
Based on the study results and the positive feedback we received from our customers abroad, we launched our own dietary supplement in Norway. We gave this the brand name Romega® – A result of world-class research .
